To demonstrate the position,relationships,and nature of the fractured bone fragments ,with aview to deciding on the best method of treatment.

To determine the age of fracture.

To measure the length of abone and the width of medullary cavity,with aview to selecting the right size of prothesis.This is often done by taking aradiograph of the corresponding intact bone of the opposite limb.

To visualize asuspected fracture not demonstrable clinically.

To assess the degree of repair.
